Exploring Collaborative Genius in Music Creation: Insights from Justin Vernon and Jim-E Stack

The Genesis of ‘SABLE, fABLE’

Justin Vernon and Jim-E Stack’s latest musical project, SABLE, fABLE, is a testament to the power of collaboration in music. Integrating sounds and styles, the duo embarked on a two-year journey of creative exploration to produce an album that stays true to their unique artistic visions.

Unscripted Creation

According to Justin Vernon, the album’s formation was serendipitous and largely unstructured. A sample provided by a colleague named Sam sparked the initial inspiration. “This just came straight from a sample from Sam, and somewhat unchanged,” Vernon explains. The simplicity of the beginning belied the complexity of the development process that followed, highlighting the spontaneous nature of some of their best work.

The Role of Technology and Experimentation

Jim-E Stack reflects on the integration of modern technology into their music-making process. Without initially adding much, the focus eventually shifted towards enhancing the track’s depth. “I think we transcribed the chords a bit, and I put them on some like, MIDI keyboards and stuff, just yeah, like, give it more weight,” says Vernon about their technical approach to enriching the sound.

Breaking Musical Conventions

The album also reflects a departure from conventional musical patterns. Jim-E Stack’s approach to drumming on the album, avoiding traditional beats, adds a distinctive flavor. “One of the more creatively successful songs, I think, totally, and that’s just so fun, classic Jimmy drums that no two and four yet, it’s just blew my mind,” he comments on their innovative approach.

Challenges and Revelations

Vernon shares an anecdote about working on the drum tracks in Los Angeles, emphasizing the trial and error involved in finding the right sound. “It was funny. I remember doing that because I had the session and stuff in LA, and was like working on the drums. And it was like pouring over these, like, really, you know, like, tasteful, whatever f–king drums. It was just like, not it,” he recalls, illustrating the often unpredictable nature of creative work.
