Linda Ronstadt Reflects on “Prisoner in Disguise” as it Marks its 50th Anniversary with a Special Reissue

Linda Ronstadt, an icon of the ’70s music scene, recently shared her thoughts on the 50th anniversary of her album, Prisoner in Disguise. This album, which followed her monumental success with Heart Like a Wheel, holds a special place in her illustrious career, reaching the top 5 on the 200 shortly after its release.

The album showcases Ronstadt’s dynamic vocal range, featuring soul-stirring covers of tracks by Dolly Parton, Smokey Robinson, and Martha and the Vandellas. These interpretations not only highlight her vocal prowess but also her ability to deeply connect with the music and the audience, making hits like “Heat Wave” climb up to No. 5 on the Hot 100.

To commemorate this milestone, Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab is delighted to offer fans a chance to own a piece of music history with a high-quality 180-gram, 45RPM two-LP vinyl set, which has been mastered from the original analog tapes. This collector’s edition can be ordered directly through Mobile Fidelity’s website.

Reflecting on the album’s legacy, Ronstadt shared a heartfelt letter, revealing her personal and professional journey during the making of Prisoner in Disguise. She reminisced about the vibrant Southern California rock scene of the ’70s, her memorable encounters, and collaborations with music legends such as Don Henley, Glenn Frey, and Smokey Robinson.

Ronstadt shared an amusing anecdote about a backstage poker game with Smokey Robinson and her bandmembers from the Eagles, highlighting her then-secret crush on Robinson. This candid reflection adds a personal layer to her professional achievements, showcasing the intertwined relationships and experiences that shaped her music.

She also acknowledged the unsung heroes of her musical journey, like the three-foot teddy bear named Alfred Bear, a comforting presence during her recording sessions. Ronstadt’s letter not only serves as a reflection but also as an expression of gratitude towards everyone who supported her through her artistic endeavors.

In 2021, Ronstadt took a significant step to preserve her musical heritage by partnering with Irving Azoff’s Iconic Music Group, ensuring that new generations would continue to discover and cherish her timeless music.

Ronstadt’s full letter is a powerful reminder of her impact on music and her enduring legacy that continues to inspire artists and fans alike.
