My Chemical Romance New Album 2027: MCR5, Release Plans and Possible 2028 Tour
My Chemical Romance have given their clearest public indication yet that new music could be on the way. At the band’s October 30, 2026 concert at the Hollywood Bowl, Gerard Way told the audience that MCR want to make a record in 2027, adding that the group would probably not play shows that year and that they hoped to see fans in 2028. As reported by NME, the remarks point to a potential recording-focused year rather than a firm release or touring schedule.
The distinction matters: there is no formally announced 2028 My Chemical Romance tour. Way’s wording offered fans a prospective timeline, not dates, venues or an on-sale plan.
Gerard Way maps out a potential 2027 album and 2028 return
For now, Way’s Hollywood Bowl comments point to a new record as the focus of My Chemical Romance’s immediate plans. He said they want to make it in 2027, with live activity likely to pause while they do so. His reference to a hoped-for 2028 reunion with fans remained tentative, not a completed touring announcement.
That is a more concrete public position than a vague studio tease, but important details remain absent. The band have not said when recording would begin, whether an album would arrive during 2027, or what form a return to the road in 2028 might take. For now, the useful takeaway is straightforward: MCR have publicly expressed an intention to make a record next year, and any 2028 live plans remain unconfirmed.
San Antonio comments showed MCR’s album talk was building
The Hollywood Bowl statement was not the first time Way had raised the prospect of another album during the 2026 shows. At My Chemical Romance’s September 12 performance in San Antonio, he told fans they deserved another record and said the band had always wanted to make one, according to Rolling Stone Canada.
Read together, the two onstage remarks show the idea developing in public. The San Antonio comments communicated desire and possibility; the Hollywood Bowl comments attached that ambition to a specific year and suggested a corresponding break from shows. Neither statement, however, amounts to a conventional album announcement with a title, release campaign or confirmed timetable.
What “MCR5” does—and does not—confirm
Fans and music media have widely adopted “MCR5” as shorthand for a possible fifth My Chemical Romance studio album. It is a practical label for the project, not an official title. As Kerrang! notes, the band have not announced an album title, release date, tracklist, producer or confirmed release window.
That leaves considerable room between a stated intention to make a record and a finished, scheduled album. There is also no basis yet for attaching a sound, concept or personnel list to the prospective release. “MCR5” is best understood as fan and media shorthand for the project Way discussed—not confirmation of a title or a guarantee that the record will be released in 2027.
A new record would follow a long gap between studio albums
If the project reaches release, it would be My Chemical Romance’s first studio album since Danger Days: The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys, which arrived in 2010. The band have issued original music since then—most recently the standalone 2022 song “The Foundations of Decay”—but not another full-length studio album, as Consequence reports.
That gap explains the weight attached to Way’s comments without requiring them to carry more certainty than they do. A new full-length would be a major development in the group’s recorded catalogue; at present, it is an expressed plan rather than a release-ready album.
The Black Parade anniversary campaign preceded the Hollywood Bowl announcement
The remarks also arrived in the orbit of The Black Parade’s 20th-anniversary campaign. My Chemical Romance’s official store listed an anniversary edition scheduled to ship on October 23, 2026, containing six bonus tracks: three previously unreleased live recordings and three rare B-sides. The release details are set out on the band’s official Warner Records store.
That edition is a retrospective release, not evidence of what the prospective new album will contain or when it will appear. The next concrete milestone remains an official My Chemical Romance announcement. Until then, the record Way said the band want to make in 2027—and the hoped-for 2028 return—should be treated as plans in development, not confirmed release and tour schedules.
