Tina Turner’s Legacy Cemented with Statue in Her Hometown
A majestic 10-foot statue now stands proudly in the small town of Brownsville, Tennessee, honoring the late Tina Turner, an iconic figure in the music industry renowned as the “Queen of Rock ‘n’ Roll.” This grand statue was unveiled in a heartfelt ceremony attended by locals and fans alike, depicting Turner in her electrifying performance stance.
A Tribute in Bronze
The bronze sculpture captures Turner’s dynamic stage presence, featuring her famous wild hair and her signature move of holding the microphone with an extended index finger. Sculptor Fred Ajanogha was tasked with the challenge of translating Turner’s vibrant energy into the statue, aiming to reflect her powerful persona and her style, which he likened to a “mane of a lion.”

The unveiling ceremony was a key event during the 10th annual Tina Turner Heritage Days, a festival that draws visitors from across the nation to celebrate Turner’s life and music. This year, the event held particular significance as it followed her passing on May 24, 2023. Turner, who had a series of hit songs such as “Proud Mary” and “What’s Love Got To Do With It,” left behind a legacy that continues to inspire artists globally.
A Community’s Pride
Located near the site where Turner once attended high school, the statue not only marks her contributions to music but also serves as a beacon of inspiration for the community of Brownsville. Approximately 50 donors, including a significant contribution from Ford Motor Co., which is constructing an electric truck factory nearby, funded the creation of this statue.
Fans like Karen Cook, who traveled from Georgia for the unveiling, shared their personal connections to Turner’s music, highlighting how her songs were a staple in many households, including her own.
Preserving Historical Roots
The statue is strategically placed near the West Tennessee Delta Heritage Center, home to a museum dedicated to Turner. This museum is housed in the renovated Flagg Grove School, a significant site where Turner received her early education. The school, originally in Nutbush, was relocated and restored, serving as a historical anchor and a tribute to Turner’s early life and enduring influence.
